FIAT to Debut the Newest Member of the Cinquecento Family – The FIAT 500X

FIAT is set to debut the latest member of its venerable Cinquecento or 500 family, the 500X, at the Paris Auto Show. This latest addition will share the same basic platform as the FIAT Grande Punto, Ram ProMaster City, FIAT 500L, the newest Jeep Renegade, and the Alfa Romeo MiTo along with several others.

According to the latest press release from FIAT, the 500X represents “the substance of a car that is comfortable, high-performance, and always in touch with the world”. In essence, the new 500X has been designed to be a “soft-road crossover” that offers extra comfort and safety in a number of driving conditions for you and your family. The overall style and design is such that it should appeal to a wide range of customers based on gender, age, tastes, and needs.

Five Doors and More

The new 500X from FIAT is a five-door hatchback measuring approximately 167.3 to 168.1 inches in length depending on the trim level you choose and 70.9 inches wide by 63.0 to 63.8 inches tall. These dimensions actually make it significantly larger than the base 500 car. In many ways this is similar to the Mini Cooper Countryman that is also larger than the standard Mini Cooper. The good news is that the larger outer dimensions make the 500X very spacious for both front and rear seat passengers. Along with this, you will find there is plenty of cargo space for your luggage, or a pretty good size shopping spree.

Hiding Under the Hood

When shopping for your new FIAT 500X you will be able to choose from either front-wheel or all-wheel drive to suit both your needs and any driving conditions you might to encounter. More importantly, there are a total of three different gasoline power plants to choose from in the worldwide model announcements. These are 1.4, 1.6, and 2.4 liters, all of which are inline four-cylinder configurations. You will also be able to choose from either a 1.4 Or 2.0 liter inline four-cylinder diesel.

Choice is the name of the game with the new 500X. There are expected to be two different transmissions available to transfer the power to the wheels. These are the six speed manual gearbox and a nine-speed torque converter driven automatic in the global market. Details regarding what will be available for the U.S. market have yet to be finalized, but rumor has it the U.S. versions may feature a 1.4 liter turbocharged engine and a 2.4 liter naturally aspirated model.  The 1.4 is expected to produce 160 hp, while the 2.4 liter will develop 184 hp.

Extra Goodies for You

For optimum ride and control, the all-new 500X will feature strut suspension on all four corners.  Along with this the 500X will be equipped with a “Drive Mode Selector”. This will allow you to change the shift points for better fuel economy or performance. This system also affects the way the power steering and the overall throttle response functions.

Not to be outdone, FIAT is planning to incorporate a host of the latest technology in the 500X. Among these are a lane-departure warning system and blind spot warning. You will also be able to add the turn by turn TomTom navigation system as an optional feature. The interior will be available in a wide range of materials, allowing you to customize your 500X to meet your tastes and needs.

The new FIAT 500X is expected to be a welcome addition the 500 lineup, one we know FIAT buyers will fall in love with. This new compact crossover is expected to be a hit at our dealership and on the streets of America, where the other 500 models are already taking the country by storm.
